often multi purpose, e.g. water supply, flood prevention, HEP generation

can store water in reservoir and be effective in regulating water flow 

expensive, and reservoirs often flood lareg areas of land 

e.g. clywedog reservoir llanidloes, fills in winter and released in summer, to have constant flow
