Generation of an Action Potential
Action Potential:
- Occurs when neurone is stimulated (recieves nerve impulse from another neurone)
- Is a reversal of potential difference across the neurone membrane (inside becomes positive)
- It self-propagates and travels along the neurone (node to adjacent node)
- Resting Potential -
- sodium ion/potassium ion pump maintains a resting potential of -70mV
- Depolarisation -
- gated (closed) sodium ion channel proteins open
- action potential - neurone is stimulated
- gated potassium ion channel proteins remain closed
- rapid diffusion of sodium ions into axon
- raising membrane potential to +40mV
- action potential then self-propagate and travels
- due…
