Why the General Strike failed

  • Govt prepared - planning during 9 month subsidy period
  • Govt set up the OMS (the Organisation for the Maintenance of Supplies) under Winston Churchill - took hard line against the strike using propaganda, army + police
  • Middle class opposed the strike - Communism scared them and many communists supported the strike
  • Many middle class men volunteered as strike breakers…
