Ectopic expression-when there is an expression of a gene in tissues where it is not normally expressed or at a time when the gene is not normally expressed. Ectopic expression studies have revealed information about gene redundancy, specificity and cell autonomy. Gene expression is controlled in bacterial cells as they regulate the rate at which specific genes are transcribed. This can be done by varying the promoter sequence for RNA polymerase to initiate transcription more efficiently. Transcription is never truly switched off, it is simply at a basal level of gene expression which is very low, so no real expression of the gene is seen.
