Gender and Education

Typically the exam question will ask that of achievement (why do girls do better than boys); subject choice; and harder questions include that of how gender identites affect experience of school and how schooling affects gender identities.

What to say when given these questions:

Achievement- Boys in the 1980s outperfomed girls academically, perhaps because of gender roles and expectations of that particular society. Also, nowadays girls do 8% better than boys at GCSE, which could be argued because of high encouragemt for girls to go to univeristy. As a result of this, there are about 30% more girls going to uni than boys.

Subject choice- It remians heavily 'genered'; where typical boy subjects include vocational and computing compared to typical girl subjects which are hair and beauty and humanties.

Experience of schooling/ gender identities- A pupils identity may affect their school experience, where schools may reinforce traditional ideas. Also, gender identity varies from each person, ethnicity and social class.

Additionally, manufactoring jobs which are traditional masculine jobs are decreasing therefore boys now see no future for them in education. Boys like the lads in Willis study would have intended to go into these jobs.

Changes to the family- Offical Statistics suggest that changes have happended within the family structure; women are more likely to take on the breadwinner role; there is more divorce and more lone parent families where women are more likely to stay single. Hence girls pursing education as having a career is normal. Crisis of masculinity is occuring as men do not know where they stand as much as more female independence has to led to more uncertain roles for men in society.

Impact of feminism- Equal opportuties for women.

Differenital sociolisation- Newman…
