The League of Nations was set up at the end of World War 1, to promote world peace. It's aim was to get poweful countries to join and it would keep peace and prevent wars.

Who joined the League of Nations?

  • France
  • Britain
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Germany

*France and Britain were the only two countries that joined the Leage of Nations from the very start. Also, USA never joined, this created a problem for the League as America were a very powerful country!

Structure of the League

The league members only met once a year, this was another problem faced by the league. Many problems were just forgotten about. The meetings should have been more regularly.

Each member was equal and had 1 vote each.

The league aimed to provide help to:

  • Refugees
  • Women
  • Drug addicts
  • Healthcare
  • Undeveloped countries
  • Slavery
  • Minorities

*They were in charge of mandates

Successes of the League

  • In 1921, between Sweden and Finland, was the Aaland Islands. Both Sweden and Finland wanted to own the Islands and were both ready for fight for them. The league got involved and decided that the Islands should belong to Finland. Sweden accepted theit choice. This gives an example of how the League was successful, but only because the countries were small and that Sweden decided to accept their choice.
