General causes:

  • heavy rain
  • melting of snow from the Himalayas
  • Deforestation-increases surface run-off
  • Buildings built on flood plains

Specific causes: the main causes for the 2004 flood:

  • The monsoon arrived early
  • Flood waters had drained south wards and the capital began to flood

 

Impacts:

  • 30 million people were made homeless
  • 1070 people died, from drowning, snake bites and diarrhoea
  • Lots of crops were badly damaged
