Gating and the difference between a noise gate and a compressor
(Note wikipedia really does put it best for this so this isn't particularly in my own words)

  • Compressors attenuate signals above a set threshold
  • Gates attenuate signals below a set threshold
  • Noise gates attenuate by a fixed amount known as the range
  • When the signal is above the set threshold the gate is 'open', allowing signal to pass through, and when the signal falls below the threshold, the gate 'closes'
  • A noise gate is used when the level of the 'signal' is above the level of the 'noise'. The threshold is set above the level
