Plants need carbon dioxide for photosynthesis so they need certain adaptations for effective gas exchange:

  • large flat shape for a larger surface area for more gas exchange to take place
  • waxy cuticle - waterproof layer to stop water loss
  • palisade cells - lots of chloroplasts for photosynthesis
  • air spaces…
