Further Biology - Using Yeast

HideShow resource information

YEAST is a single-celled FUNGUS

YEAST is a microorganism. A yeast cell has:

  • Nucleus
  • Cytoplasm
  • Vacuole
  • Cell Membrane
  • Cell Wall

YEAST can respire with or without oxygen.

Equation for anaerobic respiration of glucose by yeast (i.e. FERMENTATION):

GLUCOSE --> ETHANOL + CARBON DIOXIDE + ENERGY

Equation for aerobic respiration of glucose by yeast (producing more energy that yeast needs to grow and reproduce):

GLUCOSE + OXYGEN --> CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER + ENERGY

YEAST can be used to MAKE BREAD

  • Yeast is used in dough to…
