ACTIVE TRANSPORT is when substances are absorbed against the concentration gradient

ROOT HAIRS are specialised to absorb water and minerals:

  • Cells on surface of plant roots grow into long 'hairs' that stick out into soil
  • This increases surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions from soil
  • Most water and mineral ions that get into plant are absorbed by root hair cells

ROOT HAIRS take in minerals via ACTIVE TRANSPORT

  • Concentration of minerals in root hair cell is usually higher than the concentration in the soil around it
