Functions of the liver

  • control of blood glucose levels, amino acid levels, lipid levels 
  • synthesis of red blood cells in the fetus, bile, plasma proteins, cholesterol
  • storage of vitamins A, D and B, iron, glycogen 
  • detoxification of alcohol and drugs Alcohol depresses nerve activity. It is broken down by ethanol dehydrogenase to ethanal. Ethanal is then converted to ethanoate by ethanal dehydrogenase. This is combined with coenzyme A to form acetyl coenzyme A which enters respiration. Hydrogen atoms are released in this process combine
