-Sleep is divided into SWS and REM sleep
SLOW WAVE SLEEP
-Growth hormone is secreted during SWS which is why it is important during childhood, it is also important in adulthood because it allows cell repair to take place.
-When sleep-waking cycle are reversed by 12 hour the release of GH with sleep is also reversed... controlled by neural mechanisms related to SWS.
-Lack of SWS has been associated with reduced functioning of the immune system. (antibodies)
