Functionalism on education

-Secondary socialisation:

This is the teaching of societies norms and values through the education system.

This creates value consenus as we all agree on what the correct values are.

Durkheim believes this creates social solidarity. This is when individuals feel part of a wider society. However, this can be criticised as many do not feel part of this wider society. This can be due to institutional racism embedded in the hidden curriculum which means many will not follow the norms of society.

Parsons believes education acts as bridge between the family and widersociety. This is because the family teaches particularistic standards, (rules that apply to one person), whereas education and wider society follow universalistic standards, (rules that apply to everyone).

-Selection and role allocation:

This is when people are matched with jobs based on their abilities.
