-two innate drives believed to be motivation for all human behaviour, Eros & Thanatos
-Eros; focuses on enjoyment of life
-Thanatos; drive towards death
-to prevent us from hurting ourselves Thanatos redirected away from person towards others, resulting in aggression
-humans aren't aggressive all the time, Freud claimed this is due to catharsis - way of satisfying urges without resorting to violent impulses e.g. watching violence or taking part in minor aggression like video games & sport
