Freud believed that the workings of the mind could be rationally explained through the scientific method of observation and analysis. His reasoning was based on his continued psychoanalysis of patients who were suffering from neurosis or physical symptoms that had no obvious cause. He let his patients speak freely in an attempt to unlock their previously repressed thoughts. From his many case studies, Freud saw clear evidence for the Oedipus complex and concluded that repressed sexual feelings were at the root of these illnesses.
