Free will and determinism

Free will states that we have complete control over our behaviour and make our own decisions.

Evaluation of free will :

a strength of free will is that is fit societies views so is easily accepted. Our whole justice system is based on the idea that we are aware of our own thoughts and make our own decisions. If we do not have free will it causes an issue with punishing criminals.

A limitation of free will is that it believes all behaviour is random therefore we cannot study it making free will unscientific and unfalsifiable because you cannot test it to establish cause and effect to create a general law of behaviour.

However, people with free will views do not want to create general laws of behaviour because they believe we are all unique. therefore, a strength is that supports individuality a takes into account context as human react differently in the same situation depending on emotions.

Determinism is the idea that we are controlled by external and/or internal forces meaning our behaviour is out of our control.

There are many forms of determinism which include: hard, soft, biological, environmental and psychic.

Hard determinism is the idea that we are completely controlled by these forces and absolutely no control over our environment.

Soft determinism is the idea that we are controlled by the internal and external forces but make exercise some type of control.
