Private vs Public:
- at the time, the cult of the domestic was strong
- where do we see women behave/treated differently in a domestic environment from how theyre treated elsewhere
- victor thinks family and lineage are important. his father chose to be a 'husband and father' and as a result gives up politics and his public life
