Media language

  • Can be broken into 6 categories: Camera, editing, lighting, sound, mise-en-scene and SFX
  • Camera
    • Long shot: Used to establish scene
    • Mid-shot: Used in conversations to show reaction
    • Close-ups: Create an intimate feeling and allows focus on detail
    • Extreme close-up: Focuses the audience on a significant item
    • High angle: Creates a sense of scale and makes the subject look small
    • Low angle: Creates a sense of importance or foreboding
    • Eye level: The camera represents the audience's view
    • Point of view shot: See the characters perspective
    • Crane shot: Gives lots of information
  • Editing
    • Straight cut: Emulates the audience's eye movement
    • Disolve: Brings a new shot into focus as the other disappears
    • The fade: Where the old image gently disappears (usually to a black screen) before the new image appears.
    • The wipe: Where the new image comes onto the screen with a distinct shaped edge and seemingly ‘pushes’ the old one off screen.
  • Lighting
    • High key lighting: All areas of the frame are lit through the use of multiple lights.
    • Low key…
