Forest Production

1. Choice of Species- In choosing the tree species, which will make up a new forest, considerations must be given to the purpose of the forest, soil conditions and climate.

2. From the nursery to the planting site- At the nursery, the trees are propagated. The most common method is to use seeds which have been collected form the best seed tress in the country or from abroad. Seeds are germinated in carefully maintained seed beds and seedlings are grown for 1 or 2 years before being transplanted to a different part of the nursery. Transplanted seedlings are given more space and seedlings are often undercut (long roots being cut off). Seedlings are treated with fertilisers and weak individuals are removed.

3. Site Preperation- A young tree usually 2 years old and 30 cm tall is vulnerable to drying out, herbivores and needs a good supply of nutrients and soil oxygen…
