- Somersets aim was to reassert Edwards ancient claim to the Scottish throne via marriage to infant Mary Queen of Scots
- Aggresive policy began- his priority
- Strategy- defeat Scots in battle, build a number of garrisons and forts in the southern border of Scotland and force them into submission
- Success- Battle of Pinkie- september 1547 -
- Failure- forts were difficult and expensive to garrison
- Failure- couldnt capture statistically significant castles at Dunbar and Edinburgh
- Failure- didn't realise amount of cooperation between France and Scotland- failed to block the Firth of Forth properly- allowed French to relieve Edinburgh
- Failure- whilst doing this French gained control of Queen Mary, taken to marry Dauphin Francis in August 1548
