scalar and vector quantities

A scalar quantity has a magnitude only.

A vector quantity has magnitude and direction.

Aroows can be used to represent vector quantities: the length shows the magnitude and the arrow points the direction that the vector is acting.

Forces are vector quantities.

Contact and non-contact forces

A force occurse when two or more objects interact.

there are two types of forces:

contact; the objects are actually touching 

non-contact; the objects are not touching
