Food sample

  • Break up food using a pestle and mortar
  • Add the ground up food and distilled water to a beaker
  • Stir the mixture with a glass rod to dissolve some food
  • Filter using a funnel lined with filter paper to remove solid bits of food

Benedicts test for (reduced) sugars - biscuits, cereal, bread etc

  • Add 5cm³ of a food sample to a test tube
  • Prepare a water bath to 75 degrees
  • Add Benedicts solution (roughly 10 drops) using a pipette to the test tube
  • Leave the test tube in the wate bath for 5 minutes (pointing away from you)
  • If sugar is there…
