Macronutrients- Required in large amounts of the diet. Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates

  • Made of amino acids
  • Needed for growth, repair and maintenance

HBV (high biological value)- Contain all of the essential amino acids we need. Mainly found in animal sources. Soya beans and quinoa are also HBV foods.

LBV (low biological value)-Missing one or more amino acids. Found in plant based sources

Protein Complementation- Combining different LBV foods to get all the essential amino acids we need. EG: bean on toast

Excess Proteins

Too much protein puts stress on the liver and kidneys


  • Growth is slowed down
  • hair nail and skins get into bad condition

Alternative Proteins

Soya, Mycoproteins, TVP (textured vegetable protein) and tofu
