Floods that happen without warning are called flash floods.

Floods are due to physical factors:

Prolonged rainfall- After a long period of rainfall, the soil becomes saturated, any further rainfall cant infiltrate, which increases runoff into rivers. Increases  discharge quickly. 

Heavy rainfall-  This means theres a lot of runof, increases the discharge quickly.
