The First Cause Argument

  • Sometimes called the cosmological argument
  • supported by St Thomas Aquinas

The first way:

  • we see things moving
  • things don't move themselves, have to be moved by something else
  • but that 'something else' also had to be moved by something that existed before it. This can't go back to infinity as there'd be no starting movement & so no second movement
  • things must have been moved by something that wasn't moved by anything else. this is called 'God'

first way depends on idea of motion, any change from one natural state to another.  Eg persons hair turns gre as change in metabolism.  All changes/movements happen as result of something else; don't just happen on their own.  Has to be a starting point to this whole process which must just be(not brought into being by anything
