tibbets reaction is presetned as unexpected by his first impressions wirtten by the author. by saying he "did part of his homework on the bus" the writer creates a character as quite uncaring and lazy at school, implying he does not put in the time and effort to concoct a good piece of writing. the noun "bus" examplifies this, showing he will nly do it if he has nothing else to do except sit there. however, it could also hint at his hidden talent, as "bus" has connotations of movement, replicating the exciting nature of his story. this is further reinforced by him being described as "not a brilliant scholar", hinting that even if he did have the talent, he didnt apply himself enough to produce a masterpeice. by using a negative it highlights all the things he is not, presenting him as hopeless, compared to the "brilliant scholars" he isnt. this all sets him up to be disapointing, and exxagerates the surprise the teacher feels when he reads the story.

the writer also shows how he is muc better than expected when the teacher doesnt believe that what he has read is indeed tibbets. after reading, he is described as going over it in "meticulous care", implying that he is doubting the existance of the piece even when he is reading it. the adjective "merticulous" has connotations of searching for the bad as well as the good, conveying that he is trying to find an excsue to…
