FEMINISM– S&D
PARAGRAPH 1:
Liberal feminism: Emerged out of the women’s rights campaign in the second wave feminism. It seeks to reform rather than revolution. Friedan: socialisation into distinct gender roles and dominant cultural ideas about masculinity and femininity in the media, work and education, these contributed to the subordination of women. This could be addressed by challenging sex discrimination in all settings and encouraging non-sexist socialisation and equal rights. Evaluation: Moderate stance – allowed action to improve position of women in society without holding out for revolutionary change – reduced gender inequality since 1970’s. Haven’t eradicated inequality – Germaine Greer argues liberation will only occur when men do not have to act in a way that men want

PARAGRAPH 2:
Radical feminist: Associated with second wave feminism – extreme viewpoint. Argue society is patriarchal and male dominated. Patriarchy is a structural feature of society and difficult to challenge. Improvements to women are superficial. Firestone: sexual class resulting from biological family. Women are at a biological disadvantage in search for power due to pregnancy and childbirth – weak and vulnerable. Tied down by requirements of breastfeeding and menstruation, to overcome this pregnancy should be abolished and an artificial womb should be developed. Evaluation: Highlights important issues – 1st to emphasise that violence maintains more power. Exaggerates the degree to which woman are similar – ignores social divisions…
