Success

Failure

  • Détente had lived up to its name. It defiantly was the relaxation of international tensions
  • Both countries recognised the need for coexistence. The clearest sign of this is how West and East Germany finally acknowledged each other's existence and borders in 1972
  • This also meant that Europe became stabilised
  • SALT I (1972) showed a concrete effort to contain nuclear proliferation. Whilst it had questionable success, it was a step forward. It would, and still is, impossible to suggest that the countries would get rid of all of their nuclear weapons; but SALT showed an effort to limit them and the prospect of Nuclear War
  • The Helsinki agreements in 1975 were also very important as they were a recognition of human rights. It also wasn’t just a bilateral agreement but engaged the wider world. The recognition of freedom of speech would be instrumental in feeding the opposition to Communist control in Eastern Europe which would help bring an end to the USSR
  • Whilst the 'handshake in space' in 1975 was little more than a symbol it represented Détente and showed people that Nuclear War was becoming less possible
  • Nixon's visit to China (1972) brought her onto
