The domestic division of labour -

functionalists - Parsons 

  • The best way to organize a family is the expressive role and instrumental role (Male).
  • This is functional for the family - The new right agrees.

The March of Progress - 

Roles becoming more equal:

segregated conjugal role: Traditional expressive and instrumental roles. 

Joint conjugal role - couples share domestic tasks and labour

The symmetrical family - Young & Willmott 

  • More equal roles
  • women goes out to work
  • men help with housewok/childcare
  • couples spend leisure time together

Why? Major social change - higher living standards, technology, better housing, women working, smaller families.

Feminism - Women decline the view of the march of progress. DUAL BURDEN. Women still do twice as much - British social attitudes.

  • Family is still patriarchal 
  • Oakey found no evidence of symmetrical family - Young and Willmott exaggerate.
  • Mothers take responsibility for children's wellbeing
  • Men held a provider ideology
  • Women took responsibility for organizing family quality time.
  • The triple shift - Duncombe and Marsden - emotional, paid, domestic labor
