Describe one way in which we can explain dysfunctional behaviour.
1.There are many explanations for dysfunctional behaviour such as the biological, behavioural, cognitive and psychodynamic all of these explanations try to isolate the particular variable that affects the behaviour. The one that I will like to expand on is the biological explanation for dysfunctional behaviour . The biological explanation looks at the nature side of the nature/nurture debate. It is based solely on the internal factors such as biochemicals, serotonin and genes, biological explanations view the brain and body as being influencing factors on things such as depression. Depression is a mood disorder, affecting how you feel and act. Biologists have expanded their knowledge on depression, they have found that low levels of serotonin affects our mood, the lower our serotonin level the lower our mood. Therefore things such anti depressants (prozac) are used to help resolve these problems, by targeting the dopamine and increasing the levels of serotonin used in the body. The biological explanation can also explain genes as being concordant with schizophrenia. Gottesman and Shields, carried out twin studies and adoption studies, to view the concordance rate for twins who had schizophrenia, they found there was a 48% concordance rate with monozygotic twins and a 12.8% with dizygotic twins. He also found that there was a higher level of concordance between biological parents with schizophrenia and their children developing it, than if children had normal biological parents and schizophrenic adoptive parents. Therefore showing that there is a link between inherited genes and behaviour, Wender also found that there was a genetic link with families suffering from severe depression and them passing it on to their offspring.
2.Another explanation for dysfunctional behaviour is the behavioural approach, the approach explains behaviour as being developed by conditioning and learning from others. Phobias can be explained using the behavioural approach, for example if a phobia is reinforced by the attention given to it the…
