Possible to inherit error in metabolism causing chemicals in brain being broken down into more toxic ones, this is linked to schizophrenia.  Also linked to fluctuations in levels of dopamine and glutamate transmitters in the brain.

Proccess of neurotransmisson

  • Infomation transmitted in the brain via combination of electrical impulses and neurotransmitters
  • Electrical impulse is triggered due to the change in charge in the neurone (action potential)
  • When electrical signal reaches terminal button it changes into a chemical message
  • Chemical message is neurotransmitter which is released from vesicles
  • Serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine are major transmitters
  • Neurotransitter is released into synaptic gap
  • Released neurotransitter travels accross synapse to next neurone
  • Neurotrasmitter binds with receptors on the next neurone to pass the message on
  • The neurotransmitter is then either reabsorbed (reuptake) or destroyed in the synapse, resuming to resting state
