Context-Dependant Forgetting
Godden & Baddeley (1975)
aim: To investigate the effect of contextual cues on the ability to recall.
method: The sample consisted of 18 participants from a university diving club, who were divided into 4 conditions: learn underwater recall on land, learn on water recall underwater, learn on land recall underwater, learn on land recall on land. The participants were presented with a list of 38 words they heard twice. The experimental design was repeated measures.
findings: the words were recalled better in the same context they were learned.
conclusion: environmental cues (context) improve recall.
