BOWLBY'S THEORY OF ATTACHMENT

  • EVOLUTIONARY- attachments are thought to develop through natural selection and a survival instinct
  • INTERNAL WORKING MODEL- the childs first attachment will provide a template for future attachments including romantic ones
  • MONTROPY- the innate tendancy to direct an attachment towards one single main caregiver 
  • CRITICAL PERIOD- attachments are formed in the first three years and if not infants will struggle to form future attachments
  • EVALUATION- Evidence to support the critical period ( harlow and lorenz), Schaffer and Emerson found that multiple attachments were the norm,
