According to Durkheim, patterns in suicide rates could not be explained in terms of the Psychology of individuals

The answers lay in society, in the relationship between individuals and society and in particular, the degree to which they were integrated into social groups and regulated by society


In a strongly integrated society individuals are bound together by shared norms and values.

In a strongly integrated society, people have powerful duties and obligations to each other levels of integration vary between societies and between groups within society.
