Why must these substances be removed?

Carbon Dioxide:

Excess carbon dioxide is toxic. It has 3 main effects:

  • Carbon Dioxide is carried in the blood as hydrogencarbonate ions. This happens in the red blood cells. The hydrogen ions combine with haemoglobin.They compete with oxygen for space on the haemoglobin. If there's too much carbon dioxide in the blood, it can reduce oxygen transport.
