- Groups compete for higher status, gives them access to territory, they can protect themselves through aggressive behaviour
- Yanamamo tribe constantly fighting with other tribes over having access to women, go to war and make alliances
- Success in battle gives warrior a higher status, more wives and children
- Based on xenophobia - group membership establishes establishes 'them' and 'us' mentality - can lead to various forms of aggression.
