  This is because before the research by Robertson and Robertson, medical professionals believed that hospitals only needed to look after the physical needs of children and discouraged parents from visiting because children seemed to be too distressed by their visits. Their research showed that negative effects of emotional disruption could be avoided if substiture emotional care was provided aswell as links with existing attachment figures. This research led to major changes in the visiting arrangements for parents with children in hospitals. It also affects institutional care of children, for example in foster homes. This illustrates the positive impact that research into attachment has on childcare practices.
