Evaluation of Bowlby's attachment theory

  • Doubt cast over monotropy concept - research suggests many infants form multiple attachments Schaffer and Emerson (1964) found that some infants had no preferred attachment figure & many were attached to other figures eg father, grandparents.

  • Guilty of reflecting zeitgeist - theory places emphasis on the role of the mother - in the 1950s mothers were expected to care & provide for their children,
