Other factors are not taken into account as the theory just focuses only on the groups. Therefore they theory does not measure how much prejudice there is in different situations, such as whether there is more prejudice in certain situations. This suggests that the theory may be too simplistic in trying to explain prejudice.

Tajfel’s minimal group studies support the theory as they are able to show in-group favouritism in the absence of competition. The studies had a high level of control and used large samples, increasing the generalisbaility, reliability and validity of the results. This strengthens the level of support that the studies are able to offer to the theory. 

Dobbs and Crano (2001) conducted a minimal groups study where participants allocated points but then had to explain why they had made those allocations. When person allocating the group was in the majority group there was much less in-group favouritism…
