Ethnicity and Education

Cultural Factors:

1) Indian and Chinese families have higher levels of parental control and expectation: A study done by Strand (2007) found that Indian pupils were the most likely ethnic group to do 5 evenings a week of homework. Francis and Archer (2005) found that high value is placed on edcuation by parenents and higher educational aspirations. 

2) African Carribean families have a higher percentage of single parent households: Abbott (2002) suggests that because of a lack of male role models in both school and home has perhaps impacted the devlopment of a 'gangsta' culture.

3) The culture of anti-school black masculinty

4) Acting 'white' and acting 'black': Fordham and Ogbu (1986) suggets thata cting white means doing well in school and acting black implies not doing well.
