Ethnicity and Education

Whites and Asians do better on average than Black students, and many more inequalities to do with education and different ethnic groups which can be explained by two key factors: Internal and External, home factors.

External, home factors:

Murry - Argued that Black people genetically have a lower IQ.

Ethnic minority groups are more likely to be part of the W/C and living on lower incomes, therefore experiencing greater levels of poverty. Palmer says that almost half of ethic minority children live in low income households. Ethnic minorties are also more likely to be unemployed and around 3 times more likely to be homeless. Mirza states that over 90% of black pupils live in urban areas which have poor ofsted ratings.

Cultural Factors and Cultural Deprivation:

Family Values - Ballard - Asian parents have higher aspirations for their children educationally and were a 'positive resource'.

Pryce - African-Carribean family life is 'turbulent' and their culture is les resistant to racism resulting in low-self esteem amongst black pupils.

Family Structure - Murry - There are more single parents families within the African-Carribean community which reduces chances of educational achievement. Lack of a male role model for Black boys.

Mirza - Black families have set up 'black supplementary schools' to assit children as a form of compensatory education.

Structure and Culture - Sewell - Fatherless families means that boys have no-one to aspire to making it harder to deal with adolsecent diffuculties. Due to a lack of fatherly nutring and tough love they turn to fatherless boy street gangs. Black boys are 'nutured by MTV' and have lower expectations whereas Chinese/Asians have higher inspirations and expectations and a strong work ethic.

McCulloch - Working class white boys less likely to aspire to go to University than ethnic minorities as ethnic groups see it as a way up.
