Kantian ethics
- Deontological- actions, not consequences are goof in themselves
- Summum bonum- supreme good
- A priori- knowledge prior to experience
- A posteriori- knowoledge through experience
- 3 formulations: universability, ends in themselves, kingdom of ends
- Based on duty, we shouldn't act out of compassion
- "the only good thing is the good will" Kant
Catergorical imperative (3 formulations)
- Moral statements are 'categorical'- they prescribe necessary behaviour irrespective of the consequence
1. Universability- can it be done at all times and by all people? (can your action be willed as a universal law) Universalise your action. E.g. theft, if everyone was to steal from everyone else then nothing could be owned.
