Ethanol can be made by two process, ethene recting with steam under pressure in the presence of a catalyst or, the fermentation of sugars usign enzymes in yeast
Making ethanol by fermentation
Ethanol is the alcohol found in alcoholic drinks. Ethanol fro drinks is made by the fermnetation of sugars from plants. Enzymes in yeast break down the sugar into ethnol and carbon dioxide gas:
sugar (glucose) > ethanol + carbon dioxide
C6H12O6 > 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
Making ethanol from ethene (hydration)
Ethanol for industrial use as fuel or solvent can be made from ethen gas instead of by fermnetation. Remember that ethene is made…
