In 1601, Robert Devereux led an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow Elizabeth. He was convicted of treason and beheaded on February 25th

Four other supporters, Sir Blount, Sir Cuffe, Sir Danvers and Sir Meyrick were executed, however the others were spared.

Essex’ campaign in Ireland failed as he refused to engage the enemy. He didn’t ask permission to leave Ireland and deserted his post. When he arrived in England, he burst into Elizabeth’s chambers and pled for forgiveness. Elizabeth was initially understanding however became angry at his desertion. He was charged with abandoning his command and removed from the Privy Chamber, banished
