Digestive enzymes turn the large molecules in our food into their smaller sub units. The digested molecules are then small enough to be absorbed by the small intestine. The small molecules that are absorbed into the body can be used to the build the larger molecules that are needed in cells and tissues. The process of building larger molecules from sub units is known as synthesis. Synthesis happens very slowly because the sub units rarely collide with enough force to form a bond. These reactions can be sped up using a catalyst. A catalyst is a substance that speeds up the rate of reaction without itself being used up. In living organisms, the catalyst that speeds up the synthesis reactions are enzymes. Enzymes are known as biological catalysts and are a special group of proteins that are found throughout the body. The substance that enzymes work on are called substrates and the substances that are produced are called products. Some of examples of enzymes are:
