The beginning of the novel:

- We can tell that the protagonist of the story (Joe) is an extremely descriptive character (just like Nick Carraway in some sense). He describes the wine in closeness, '1987 Daumas Gassac' and the weather as 'strong, gusty wind'.
The narrator begins with 'the beginning in simple to mark', this immediately gives a sense of control over the reader and is intending for the reader to be in complete awe of the story. Interestingly, we are aware that Joe is talking about a balloon which they are tying to save, however he does not name it a 'balloon' until page 3. Instead he names it 'the danger', 'the scene', 'colossus' and so on.
