The End of Parliament 1628-9

  • 2nd session dominated by issues of arminianism and Tonnage and Poundage
  • Commons resolved unanimously that religion take priority over other business & wanted to bargain with Customs to take religious concessions-> Charles unprepared to weaken support for Arminians -> SESSION = DOOMED
  • Commons concerned with seizure of goods from merchants refusing to pay T&P (one of whom = MP) -> obvious Parliament not going to make Charles a grant of the customs which was his main reason for holding the 2nd
