Emphysema

Emphysema is when the alveoli lose elasticity and therefore decrease the number of alveoli. This therefore reduces the surface area and makes diffusion less efficient. The lack of elastin means that when breathing out there is not enough elastic recoil. Therefore harmful gases are trapped inside the body over a longer period of time.
