EM Radiation and the atmosphere

HideShow resource information

The atmosphere keeps us warm by trapping heat

Some radiation from the sun passes through the atmosphere

  • The Earth is surronded by an atmosphere made uo of various gases
  • The gases in the atmosphere filter out (block) certain types of radiation emitted by the sun
  • They absorb or reflect the radiation, so it never reaches the Earth's surface
  • But some types of radiation (mainly visible light and some radio waves) pass through quite easily

The greenhouse effect helps to keep the Earth warm

Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop the Earth losing all its heat at night

  • Heat energy from the sun is absorbed by th Earth, warming
